A regular dental cleaning and check-up is the simplest way to avoid big dental bills later. At Brampton Smiles in Sunny Meadow, one visit covers your exam, hygiene cleaning, gum check and oral cancer screening. Most visits take 45 to 60 minutes, and your first comprehensive visit takes 60 to 90 minutes.
What happens at your dental check-up
- Medical history review. We ask about new medications, conditions and changes that can affect your mouth.
- X-rays when needed. Usually bitewings, taken based on your own risk, not a fixed schedule. They show decay between teeth, bone loss, root infections and impacted teeth that cannot be seen by eye.
- Hygiene cleaning. Scaling above and below the gumline to remove hardened tartar, then polishing.
- Gum check. We record pocket depths and bleeding points to catch gum disease early.
- Exam by the dentist. Every tooth, existing fillings and crowns, your bite and your jaw joint.
- Oral cancer screening. Included in every adult exam at no extra charge.
- Findings and plan. We explain what we found, what needs treatment, what can wait, and give you a written estimate before anything is booked.
Why brushing at home is not enough
Soft plaque hardens into tartar, sometimes within a couple of days on the spots you miss. Once it is hard, only hand instruments and an ultrasonic scaler can remove it. Tartar has a rough surface that holds more plaque at the gumline, which leads to inflammation and over time to bone loss. The most common places for buildup are behind the lower front teeth and on the cheek side of the upper back teeth.
How often should you get a teeth cleaning in Brampton?
Every 6 months suits most people. You may need a cleaning every 3 to 4 months if you:
- are in gum disease maintenance after treatment
- get cavities often
- smoke or use tobacco
- have diabetes that is not well controlled
- have dry mouth from medication
- wear braces or aligners

Insurance, CDCP and payment
Extended plans usually cover exams, cleanings and X-rays at 80 to 100 percent, up to your annual maximum and frequency limits. The Canada Dental Care Plan covers these services for eligible patients, and we are a CDCP provider. We direct-bill Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Green Shield, Desjardins, Industrial Alliance, Empire Life, ClaimSecure, Blue Cross and others, and we check your coverage before your first visit. We also offer 0% in-house payment plans.
Before Your Visit
- Bring your insurance or CDCP card and a list of your medications.
- Brush and floss as usual. You do not need to "clean up" first.
- Tell us about any sensitivity, bleeding gums or sore spots.
- If cleanings make you nervous, tell us when you book. Numbing gel is available on request.
- Evening visits run until 7 PM on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and we are open on Saturday morning.
After Your Treatment
- Your teeth may feel smooth and your gums a little tender for a day. This is normal.
- If you had numbing gel, wait until it wears off before eating hot food or drinks.
- Keep brushing twice a day and clean between your teeth daily.
- Follow the plan on your written summary and book any follow-up treatment.
