Used to prevent decay most specifically in children's teeth. There is a difference between the two treatments. Discover which option is best for you.
What Is a Dental Sealant?
A dental sealant is a thin plastic coating applied to the grooves on the chewing surfaces of healthy, decay-free teeth. Sealants create a physical barrier that literally “seals out” the food and bacteria that cause tooth decay. Sealants are cost-effective for maintaining dental health, benefiting both children and adults. Newly erupted tooth enamel requires three years to mature, making young teeth especially vulnerable to decay.
What Is Fluoride Treatment?
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that has been utilized for many years to help prevent tooth decay. Decay begins when bacteria and sugars form acids that erode tooth enamel. Fluoride strengthens enamel and prevents decay across all ages. Children receiving adequate fluoride develop stronger, more decay-resistant permanent teeth. Proper oral hygiene, good eating habits and regular dental visits are necessary alongside fluoride treatment.
